Truth Files: Update #2 Autopilot Income & Content Publishing As It Was Meant to Be
Before I get into this, I just want to thank everyone who left comments on the very first Truth Files report I wrote. Because of that, I felt like I HAD to write this second update.
I’m finding out it’s really more my nature to quietly do my own thing so keeping up with the InlineSEO.com blog is a challenge for me.
And that’s why I don’t post very often.
But due to the outpouring of comments and out-right requests (maybe even demands at times) for updates I’m trying to move out of my shell.
So anyway, I’m finally posting the second update to my Truth Files Series.
The first report I wrote (which you can get here if you haven’t seen it yet) covers the network of sites I started building in November. By March I was earning about $1,000 a month from it. I covered a little of what I did to go from about 20 small sites to $1,000 a month in that first Truth Files report.
In this one I take over where I left off, with April’s earnings, which turned out to be right at about $2,000 and go all the way through July, where you’ll see a significant increase.
The main points I’m hoping to cover in this Truth Files update are:
Autopilot income is possible, but it takes a great deal of work to create it.It’s worth the leap to go from creating 1-3 page mini-sites earning a pitiful $1/day to creating something more substantial. There’s virtually no cap on your earnings potential once you break free of the mini-site mindset.I’ve got screenshots for you and even a few pointers in this report. I really think you’ll get something out of it if you take the time to read it.
I know following earnings has been a fun way to keep myself motivated and I hope it’ll do the same for you.
So that’s it, if you want to see where I’m at now and learn a little of how I got there, read the update. Without anymore rambling … here’s the link to the second installment … Truth Files: Update #2.

Check it out! What I’ve Been Working On …
If you’ve watched the site, you know I haven’t been around much lately. So I’d like to share with you why that’s been…
I decided there’s a real lack of information on SEO as far as something people can take, digest and then follow along in order to get top rankings for their sites. So I decided to put together an SEO training course based on my year’s of SEO experience.
I actually built a site before I got started so that I was absolutely, 100% sure I didn’t leave any of the steps out. And although it’s taken me a long while to get this course together, I think it will be very worthwhile to webmasters and small business owners.
It’s turned out to be a lot longer than I expected; with about 8 hours of training videos, an Action Plan with worksheets, 6 modules and much more. Since it’s so big, and really the point behind it is to fill out the Action Plan while you watch the videos (so that you start seeing an increase in your rankings instead of just reading how to do it), I’ve decided to have it turned into a physical product. So next week, I’ll be sending it out to Cindy at Disk.com (my fulfillment company).
Here’s a screenshot of what the CD-Rom menus will look like:
I’ve put a lot of work into this product and really think it’ll be a great help for people who want to learn how to get top rankings.
Anyway, I’m really excited about it! And I just wanted to let you know why I’ve taken the long break and that I will definitely start posting again.

Check it out!Why You Can’t Make Money Online
I’ve been thinking a lot over the past year about why people fail with Internet Marketing. I guess since I’ve spent so much time thinking about it, this report just flowed right out of me yesterday.
It’s geared toward people who aren’t succeeding with their Internet Marketing efforts.
If you’re already seeing success, then I bet you’re already doing what’s in the report. And if so, please take a minute to leave a comment for everyone else.
If your not seeing success then I think this report will shed some light on why that may be.

Converseon and CIC – International Social Media Monitoring coming of Age
As I’m writing a chapter on International Social Media Monitoring and Analytics it comes to light Converseon and CIC have partnered to add depth to Conversation Miner’s Chinese monitoring capabilities.
November 10, 2010, New York, NY.–(PRWEB)—Converseon, the international, full service social media consultancy, and CIC, the leading Chinese social media intelligence provider, announced today a strategic partnership to effectively integrate CIC’s Chinese social monitoring and analytics capabilities into Converseon’s global Conversation Mining Listening solutions. The partnership extends Converseon’s social mining capabilities into Mainland China, while enabling CIC to access Converseon’s other multi language capabilities and social media consulting services for its clients.
The agreement helps marry a Chinese based “best of breed” provider into Converseon’s rapidly expanding global listening platform to help provide multi-national brands with a consistent, robust and comprehensive social listening solution. Converseon was recently recognized as a leader in a recent independent report by Forrester Research Inc: “The Forrester Wave: Listening Platforms, Q3 2010,” Forrester Research, Inc., July 12, 2010.
When you think about it, this deal makes alot of sense. 4 years ago English and Japanese were about equal in number of blog posts, imagine what the numbers look like today (I can’t find an equivalent chart for 2010, else I’d have presented it instead).
I meant to write about this yesterday, but as I mentioned I lost a good part of last night’s post due to bug in WordPress. Part of what was in that post was my mention of the Converseon / CIC deal.
I think we’ll be seeing more deals like this soon.

Monitoring Social Media 2010 Conference & Bootcamp NYC thoughts and Recollections
Decided to write about Monitoring Social Media 2010 and Monitoring Bootcamp, along with some videos I made without my notes (I took many notes on my iPad, but found they are more to help me remember what’s important and paste here).
Katie Paine thinks Social Media isn’t entirely measurable because people are unpredictable (and she’s right); Katie also presented several case studies showing Social Media ROI but it struck me that what we should be calling this is “Reverse ROI” because most of what I hear from Social Media Case studies is how money is saved, how processes are optimized that already existed. I think what makes more sense is to say that we can generate income from Social Media outreach but we don’t yet have all the neccessary data or processes in place to do so.
And when we can get ROI from Social Media, it’s usually an e Commerce site or business. The rest of the case studies talk more about money saved, so they really translate into what is generally understood as Return on Investment; ROI does not suit Social Media as a metric, basically.
Trey and Loic from Synthesio had a very nice way of taking the “4 elements” and turning into the 4 Brand Types, and mentioned how monitoring had to be different for a “Boring Brand” that is functional vs. an “Exciting Brand” like Lady Gaga. If your a “Vital Brand” then you need to be especially responsive to your customers. I can see where we can make this a built in segmentation in monitoring tools such as Radian6. It may be the ideal way to collect the data we need is to merge qualitative information such as surveys into monitoring by embedding individuals in target communities to collect slang terms and other types of information that could be used for a listening platform, but can’t be gotten the normal ways by just searching on keywords you’d think the communities are using, but totally bypass the important words and insights they actually use, a problem we often see in this type of listening.
That reminds me – don’t have time to write a full post on it yet but Radian6 is rolling out some improvements shortly, possibly by Monday that will give users (including me) the following features, most that I’ve been asking for.
- Baseline vs current (last month vs. this month)
- nearness operators (we so need this)
- hashtags and other special characters are recognized (very needed).
Can’t wait to see what my dashboards look like Monday (if they do roll the changes out this weekend).
Cory Hartlen from Radian6 talked about the key metrics they monitor for with their clients (there are several) and mentioned the presentation of these metrics is up on their Slideshare account – Cory also showed me the neat features that I just mentioned that are coming up.
Giles Palmer, CEO of Brandwatch also went through several case studies showing ROI of Social Media and that’s when the idea of Reverse ROI (should be the subject of my second book, you know!!!) came to me.
Chase McMichael talked about being able to track the content that is most shared, top affinities and Social Relevance – he gave me a widget I will put up on this blog shortly to show what that all means and mentioned a community manager needs to feed their community good content and do we always know how to find that out? Well, Chase’s company has found out a way to do that and to know what that content is.
There was also a very interesting presentation by People Browser and a lot say about the Bootcamp yesterday, but that will need to be in another post – but not to leave you empty handed, here’s a few videos I made Thursday and Friday.

QR Codes and Analytics Tracking
I was about to go to bed when I decided to try one more thing.
You know the QR Codes that everyone is getting into now, they’ve been around forever but now are being used intelligently, and all you need is software on a mobile device that has a camera so it can take a picture of the QR codes.
There’s a couple things you need to know.
1. Bit.ly and Goo.gl now make QR codes automatically when you shorten a url using their platforms – read about it in a recent TechCrunch post titled – With Their Own QR Code Trick, Bit.ly Eats Google’s Balls.
2. QR Codes are the interface for Web Analytics is the 3D world, our world.
Normally, you’d have a JavaScript beacon tag that fires off a script when a browser renders a website that a visitor comes to, but that’s just for websites. What happens when we visit a restaurant, say, and look at a menu (like I often do and did at Havana Central). How would I fire off a tag there? After all, I’m not a browser – or am I? Maybe I am.
Take that QR code up in my post – it’s an executive summary of my book on Social Media Analytics that’s on my DropBox. By making a shortened link bit.ly just created a QR code for the file/page.
But what if it was a item on a restaurant’s menu where you could use a QR reader to get more information. Or maybe it’s some other thing we want people to interact with – doesn’t matter. What matters is Bit.ly counts every time someone takes a picture of the QR code I have up in this blog and gives me stats on it, stats you can now have too.
I think there’s a lot of power here that hardly any one has tapped, and I’ll have a lot to say about it in my book. Meanwhile, here’s some more from TechCrunch
Yes, just like with goo.gl, now you can add “.qr” to the end of any bit.ly link (including custom ones, like our own tcrn.ch
) and you’ll be taken to a page with a QR code for that link. But look closely. Below the QR code, the Bit.ly fish is about to eat something — some colorful balls. You know, the same colorful balls associated with Google.
Bit.ly is clearly taking a shot at their rival, whoentered the URL shortening game last December and two weeks ago opened their product to the public. Both now offer anyone on the web a simple way to shorten a link and get analytics on the usage of the link. Google says their version is the “stablest, most secure, and fastest URL shortener on the web.” Bit.ly, once again, is telling Google to suck.it.
Enjoy and have fun with this – start using QR codes intelligently to track your campaigns and take back some of the “ultraviolet” data that can become visible with just a little bit of ingenuity and thought.
